Staying in a Dorm with Travelers from Around the World: Futura Boutique Hostel Singapore

My journey continued from Malaysia to the Lion City, Singapore. After arriving at Harbourfront, where my bus dropped me off, it was time to head to my accommodation.

However, since check-in wasn’t until 3:00 PM, I decided to explore HarbourFront Mall while waiting. I also tried withdrawing cash from several ATMs inside the mall. Honestly, it was quite difficult to find an ATM that worked well with Indonesian debit cards without high conversion fees. In the end, I withdrew cash anyway and accepted the extra charges at that point, all I cared about was getting to my hostel and resting.

Because I didn’t realize that I could easily use public transport like buses or the MRT, I ended up booking a GrabCar for around SGD 12 (about IDR 130,000 at the time). Definitely not the most budget-friendly choice, but it was my first time in Singapore so I’ll count it as part of the experience!

When I arrived, I was surprised to find that the hostel didn’t have a traditional front desk or reception staff. Instead, I was sent a YouTube link with instructions on how to check in and access my room using a key card.

Located at 259 Outram Road, this hostel is in a very strategic area especially for first time visitors to Singapore.

Strategic Location for Travelers

Why? Because it’s just a short walk from the bus stop. You can easily get there on foot, making it very convenient to travel anywhere.

For food, there’s a 7-Eleven just a 5–7 minute walk away, offering quick and reliable halal meal options. There are also several nearby eateries, including Chinese food stalls, which are great for non-Muslim travelers.

Near the bus stop, you’ll also find a gas station with a minimarket (although I didn’t personally visit it). Around the 7-Eleven area, there are also small parks and seating areas—perfect for relaxing, eating, or just unwinding outdoors.

Budget

I booked this hostel about two weeks in advance through Agoda and managed to get a rate of around 300,000 Rupiah for each one night. Including taxes, I paid approximately IDR 800,000 for two nights. In my opinion, this was one of the most affordable options I found during my hostel search (even compared to Malaysia).

In 2026, I can’t guarantee the price will still be the same, it will most likely go up. This rate applies to capsule style dorm beds only, not private single rooms.

Facilities at Futura Boutique Hostel

Be prepared, there are quite a lot of stairs (it honestly felt like climbing Rapunzel’s tower!). My room was on the third floor, and I was completely out of breath by the time I got there. But if you’re traveling on a budget, it’s a small trade off.

Dorm Room

Wondering where to store your luggage? Each guest is assigned a labeled space that matches their capsule. You can place your suitcase under the corresponding label and hang your clothes on designated hooks. Inside each capsule, there’s also a small storage box where you can keep essentials like your bag, shoes, toiletries, and other personal items.

When I first arrived, I saw six capsules with closed curtains and mistakenly thought they were all occupied. I even contacted customer service only to realize later that I simply needed to open the curtain to check whether the capsule is already occupied or not. Don’t make the same mistake I did!

Bathroom

The bathrooms are shared and not separated by gender, so you can use whichever is available. Soap, shampoo, and towels are provided, but you’re welcome to bring your own toiletries if you prefer. Towels are usually found inside your capsule.

In terms of cleanliness, I’d rate the bathrooms 10/10. The shower and toilet areas are separated by walls, so everything stays clean and dry. Best of all, there’s a bide, something many travelers will definitely appreciate!

Common Area

Don’t worry if you want to eat, the hostel provides a shared common area, so it’s best not to eat in your room. This space isn’t just for dining, you can also use it for other activities like doing laundry (there’s a washing machine available), cooking, storing food in the fridge, or simply working in an open, relaxed setting.

You’ll find this area on the second floor at the end of the corridor. It was actually my favorite spot in the hostel because I got to meet travelers from all over the world, sharing stories, and share useful tips with each other.
A quick tip if you’re staying here: bring your own water bottle. The hostel provides a water dispenser, so you can refill your bottle for free and save money on bottled water.

There’s also another facility that’s especially useful for longer stay, the ironing area. So if you have an important event, you can not only wash your clothes but also iron them and look neat and presentable during your trip.

Things to Keep in Mind

Overall, the hostel offers great value for budget travelers, but there are a few things that could be improved:

  • Stairs: The steep staircase can be challenging, which can be even more challenging for those who are overweight or mobility concerns. I noticed some travelers struggling to reach the upper floors.
  • Prayer Space for Muslim travelers, there isn’t a dedicated prayer room. While this may be understandable given the local context, a small designated space (even 2×2 meters) would be very helpful, as the nearest mosque is quite far.

That wraps up a quick overview of Futura Boutique Hostel on Outram Road, Singapore ideal option for those who love to travel on a budget. If you’d like to see what it looks like, feel free to click the button below.
