First Time Traveling Abroad? Here’s the Complete Checklist for a Smooth Trip

Planning a trip abroad is always exciting—from imagining your first flight, exploring a new country, to bringing home tons of great memories. But to make sure your journey goes smoothly without any drama at the airport or immigration, there are a few important things you need to prepare before departure. To make it easier, here’s a complete and practical checklist you can follow for a safe, comfortable, and stress-free vacation!

Important Documents & Administration

  • Check your passport validity — make sure it’s valid for more than 6 months from your return date. This is a strict requirement in many countries.
  • Buy a round-trip ticket — immigration officers often ask for proof of return.
  • Prepare your accommodation booking proof (hotel confirmation or voucher). This is commonly checked at immigration.
  • Fill out the arrival card for your destination country (usually available 3 days before departure). Examples: Malaysia (MDAC), Singapore (ICA), Indonesia (All Indonesia). Instructions are widely available online.

Spiritual & Health Preparation

  • For Muslims, perform repentance prayer (sholat taubat) if needed as part of your spiritual preparation.
  • Use the restroom before boarding — during turbulence, toilet use may be restricted.

Packing & Luggage

  • Fill your suitcase only halfway so you have space for souvenirs on the way back.
  • Check your cabin baggage weight — some airlines weigh it at the boarding gate. Avoid exceeding the limit.
  • Do not bring spray perfumes, aerosols, or liquids over 100 ml in carry-on luggage. Place them in checked baggage if needed.
  • Bring light snacks since onboard meals can be limited or expensive.

Flight Safety & Comfort

  • To reduce the risk of turbulence, choose flight times that usually avoid bad weather (avoid rainy seasons or extreme weather hours).

Connectivity & Finance

  • Buy an eSIM before departure so you can get instant internet access upon arrival. If not, airport provider counters usually sell eSIMs.
  • Prepare a debit or credit card with a VISA logo for smooth contactless payments in many countries.
  • Exchange some cash in Indonesia for initial expenses (transport, meals), although you can usually withdraw money at local ATMs.

Airport Transportation

  • Research transportation options from the airport: bus, MRT, taxi, or ride-hailing services. Make sure you know the routes and estimated fares from the airport to your hotel.
